A fantastic yellow piece of pedal history!
The DOD 250 preamp is another all time classic of the pedal world. It's one of the earliest 'overdrive' pedals, designed in the mid 70's. There's some debate over which came first: the 250 or MXR Distortion+. They are near identical circuits, with some small differences, like different clipping diodes. From what I've read, it was intended to be a competitor to the Dist+, but definitely has its own voice. It's loud, brash, but harmonically rich, and works great as both a boost (a la Yngwie!), or as a pure overdrive if you crank that gain knob!
The yellow enclosure (V3), circuit board, and TL081 opamp chip date this to the 80's. In theory, a more specific date can be found on the back of the pots, but the stamp is just out of view, and the way they're mounted to the board makes it difficult to prise it back to see, so I didn't want to risk it.
I've compared this directly with the modern reissue 250 which we have in stock, and it sounds quite different! It's a bit louder, gainier, and brighter than a modern one.
