Yes, this is actually from 1964, not a re-issue, or a replica version, this is the real thing!
Considering its age it is in great condition.
The obvious notable points are a crack on the scratch plate, it has had a refret some time in the distant past, and a replacement nut. These things show me that the guitar is a players instrument that has been used and enjoyed, so it must be one of the good ones! I always wonder about vintage guitars that haven't been played, I mean, why wouldn't you!
One unusual plus point, is the original binding is in great shape as all too often this degrades and cracks off in sections, but not on this one. The body has the faux "F" holes to help reduce the feedback at high volumes.
As you can see the checking on the body is simply fabulous, exactly how you want to see a vintage guitar like this.
The 1964 Gretsch 6119 Chet Atkins Tennessean in walnut/natural finish is a distinguished vintage hollow-body electric guitar, celebrated for its classic design and warm, resonant sound. Designed in collaboration with the legendary Chet Atkins, it embodies the craftsmanship and innovation Gretsch was known for during this era.
The body of the 6119 is fully hollow, constructed from laminated maple, contributing to its airy tonal qualities and acoustic-like resonance. The natural finish highlights the wood grain, giving the guitar a timeless and elegant appearance. The slender, comfortable maple neck features a rosewood fingerboard with classic thumbnail inlays, offering smooth playability and a distinctive vintage aesthetic.
Equipped with dual HiLo Tron single-coil pickups, the Tennessean delivers a clear, articulate tone with a slightly lower output, ideal for clean, jazzy sounds or vintage rock and roll. Its tonal range is highly versatile, enhanced by the inclusion of Gretsch's traditional tone-switch circuitry, individual pickup volume controls, and a master tone knob.
The hardware is both functional and stylish, featuring a Bigsby vibrato bridge, a hallmark of Gretsch guitars, adding expressive capabilities with smooth pitch modulation. The guitar's lightweight design and elegant cutaways make it comfortable for extended playing sessions and allow for easy access to higher frets. The Gretsch 6119 is not only a testament to Gretsch's legacy but also a dream instrument for players and collectors seeking an authentic slice of music history.
